چکیده

The high-pressure phase diagram of SiO2 has been calculated using density-functional perturbation theory. We find that phase transitions of silica do not correspond to any observed seismic discontinuities within the Earth. We analyze the breakdown of close packing occurring in SiO2 above 200 GPa and conclude that it is due to asphericity and deformability of ions, which can generally lead to the formation on non-close-packed structures at high pressure. Our calculations indicate that pyrite-structured SiO2, stable above 200 GPa, has no soft modes down to ambient pressure and could, therefore, be quenchable. Above 750 GPa a cotunnite-type phase is stable.

The effect of smart water and silica nanoparticles injection on wettability of limestone

Today, by using half of the oil reserves of the world, natural production of oil has decreased drastically. Gas and water injection for maintaining reservoir pressure is not responsive for oil production. At first, we dispersed silica nanoparticles in low salinity and after two weeks, there was no change in its stability. Then we mixed the nanoparticles in low salinity. After a while, we found o...

Stability of Silica Nanoparticle Dispersion in Brine Solution: An Experimental Study

Nanotechnology has various applications in oil and gas industry such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The main challenge in using nanoparticles in EOR processes is their stability in harsh conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and intermediate to high salinity. However, most of the recent experimental works have been performed under unrealistic conditions such as the use of distill...

Further studies of a simple atomistic model of silica: thermodynamic stability of zeolite frameworks as silica polymorphs.

We have applied our previously reported model of silica based on low coordination and strong association [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 8415 (2004)], to the calculation of phase stability of zeolite frameworks SOD, LTA, MFI, and FAU as silica polymorphs. We applied the method of Frenkel and Ladd for calculating free energies of these solids. Our model predicts that the MFI framework structure has a regim...

A class of new high-pressure silica polymorphs

We synthesised a number of new metastable silica modifications in the electrically heated diamond anvil cells (DACs) at pressures over 100 GPa and temperatures over 1200 K. Our studies reveal the existence of a new class of silica phases with different degree of the ordering of silicon atoms. Silica polymorphs with octahedrally co-ordinated silicon known so far (stishovite, fully disordered pha...
